How To Prepare for a Newborn Session | Richmond, VA Newborn Photographer

Newborn photography is a passion of mine that I have been doing for 11 years now! Over the past 11 years, I have taken endless in-person and online courses to hone my craft in order to provide the best experience for my clients. It's a pure joy when I get to meet a family and their new baby for the first time, and many times I'm the first "outing" after the baby is born! I take great pride in this genre of photography because I know how fast these babies grow, and it's SO easy to forget how precious and tiny they once were!

Photo sessions for newborns takes a bit of preparation on the part of myself and the client! I send all of my clients a questionnaire so I am able to tailor each session to their particular family and situation. You can even send me photos of your nursery, living room, etc so I can get a feel for your style and colors! I personalize each and every session so every client is thrilled with their gallery!

I always encourage clients to book their newborn session when baby is around 2 weeks old. We tentatively schedule a date based around your due date, and then when baby is born, we settle on the actual date! Here are the tips I send all of my clients via email when they inquire about a session.

*Please give baby a nice, full feeding immediately prior to coming to the studio. We want baby to be nice and sleepy so we can get started right away!

*If you are nursing, please eat bland foods for 24 hours prior to the session. We want baby to be as least gassy as possible :)

*Try to keep baby awake for 1-2 hours prior to the session. I know it's difficult, especially during the car ride, but it will help baby be nice and sleepy when you arrive.

*Dress baby in just their diaper or a zip-up sleeper/onesie. Avoid clothing that has to go over the head to remove. When you arrive to the studio, I will wash my hands and take baby out of the car seat while keeping him/her as asleep as possible so we can get started as soon as possible!

*Bring snacks/lunch for yourselves. I encourage you to eat during the session! I will have cold water bottles and granola bars for you.

*Wear neutral colors and bring a change of clothes or two. Baby may very well have some accidents which is perfectly fine and normal! It will also be quite warm in the studio, so layer appropriately :)

*Please bring a pacifier even if you don't use one yet! Very important. No WubbaNubs please. We will use it occasionally just to soothe baby while getting them into a pose. It helps them stay asleep as well, and it will not affect the baby long-term.

Hopefully these tips give you a good idea of what all is entailed in a newborn session! It is a very sweet time with you and your new baby, and I want you to be relaxed and not worry about a thing! I am grateful to all of my clients for trusting me with their little ones. I take great pride in providing these memories for my families, and I treat each and every baby like my own!
